The Map That Invented a Country

23rd October 2025

For centuries, explorers believed in a place that did not exist.

It appeared on maps, was discussed in journals and was even given coordinates – a small, mist-shrouded island said to lie west of Ireland. It was called Hy-Brasil. Sailors swore they had seen its outline through the fog; cartographers dutifully inked it onto parchment; scholars debated its origin. Yet no one ever set foot upon it.

It existed entirely because someone, somewhere, once drew it and no one thought to question the line.

Errors, once recorded, have a way of becoming truths.

In the world of market research, this happens more often than one might think. A mistranslated phrase, a slightly altered question or a misunderstood cultural reference can enter the record, replicated in reports and soon treated as fact. Like that phantom island, a simple linguistic misstep can create an entire world of misunderstanding.

At Foreign Tongues, we spend our time checking those maps. We trace each linguistic contour, ensuring that what appears on the page truly exists in meaning and intent. Because every project, whether survey, transcript or report, is its own kind of map: an attempt to describe reality through the language of others.

Our role is to make sure that the countries you discover actually exist.

Translation, at its best, is an act of navigation, one that respects both the terrain of language and the accuracy of exploration.
Without that precision, what begins as research can drift quietly into myth.

And so, we redraw the map one word at a time.
